Juan de Arellano was born in Santorcaz near Madrid (Spain) in 1614 and died on October 12 1676.

Married María Corcuera with whom he had four children, of whom Juana who was the wife of Bartolomé Pérez, disciple and emulator of Arellano, José who was also a painter of flowers, but not as good as his father.

In his first period, he is considered as having italian influences, specially from Mario Nuzzi and Margarita Caffi and also flemish influences.

But latter, he succeesed in dominating his art and realised flower still-lifes with such a distinquished personality that he is considered as the best painter of the genre within the seventeenth century.

His compositions are rather simple : generally only appears a bunch of miscellaneous flowers often placd in a basket which stands out on a neutral background.

His colours are pure, bright and very contrasted with a powerful light coming from the Italian tradition.

His brushstroke is free and easy.

One of his more complex work is his still-life of 1665 of the Corunna's Municipal Museum in Galicia, in which Arrelano placed two vases, one of them beeing reflected in a miror.

Amongst his most important followers, we find his son José de Arellano and Bartolomé Pérez, his son-in-law.

Many of his works are located in private collections and some in museums in Spain (Prado Museum), in France and Holland.

Juan de Arellano is a painter little known by people at large, but very appreciated by the amateurs of paintings patronizing auction halls. That is why, in auctions, his paintings reach relatively raised high prices, so the auctioneer of the room Durán's two flower still-lifes were sold 180,303 € each.
Other of his paintings were sold in Tajan in Paris or in Chtisties's.

In 1998, an exhibition was dedicated to Juan de Arellano at the Madrid's Prado Museum.
